It is only a matter of time before AIS becomes compulsory for inland navigation. TRESCO has been planning for the future and has already incorporated the AIS option into Navigis. All Navigis users can activate this option on their electronic chart system.
The AIS system is based on transponder technology, which increases shipping safety on seas and rivers. Every vessel fitted with an AIS transponder transmits its own specific details.
Automatic Identification System (AIS)
The ‘Automatic Identification System’ or AIS is hot in inland navigation. This system is based on transponder technology, which increases shipping safety on seas and rivers. Every vessel fitted with an AIS transponder transmits its own specific details.
Navigis with an AIS option will display all these AIS details on the chart: name of the vessel, MMSI no., position and course. You have the possi-bility of calling up a detailed report of any AIS target, and extra information, such as destination, type of ship, load, etc., will be displayed.
Navigis provides functions for setting and transmitting Inland specific parameters such as blue sign status, loaded or unloaded status, draught with centimeter accurancy, air-draught, hazardous cargo blue cone indication, euro ship identifier and Inland ship type.
It's possible to send an ETA to for example a lock, bridge or terminal. Navigis displays received RTA sent in response to the ETA. Water level information transmitted in the AIS network by local authorities are displayed.
